Repurposing...

 

One of my favorite things to do is to find different uses for items.

And a great source is of course, Pinterest.

Sometimes just plugging in a single piece will turn up quite a few inspirational pieces.

 

For instance, I'm loving the galvanized tiered stands.

I love how they are used in decorating...so versatile!

I decided to add one to my décor but wanted to try making one.

Hm...what do I have and/or what could be picked up inexpensively?

Well, as luck would have it, I found two spring pans from a local shop.

They were the perfect size... and graduated.

 

After a bit of digging in my shop,

 I found a few architectural salvage pieces that could be used as well.

Next was a conference with my chief engineer...my hubby.

He's so smart and loves to solve my decorating puzzles.

So with his tools and a quick trip to the hardware store, I had my version of the tiered stand.

 

 

Now for the fun part...adding a bit of fall.

 

 

It's working out really well with two tiers...just the right height for my room.

I think it'll be fun changing things out for the seasons!

Picked up a few treasures...

I'm so glad that Linda over at Coastal Charm has a weekly party, Nifty Thrifty Tuesday so that we can see each other's treasures. Be sure to drop by and take a look!

I just wanted to share a jackpot day, you know, one of those days were you find really great things while thrifting? {I suppose people had cleaned their cabinets after Christmas and were ready to get rid of a few things.} I just happened to be at the right places at the right time. First stop, Salvation Army, and saw this set:



Yep, the decanter {with lid} and six glasses for around $6.00. I couldn't resist...and the silver plate tray? $4.99. It's very heavy...perfect for displaying this set. So, for ten dollars and a bit of change I had a few new treasures!



Second stop, my favorite consignment shop...found these beauties:



I'm not sure if the glass crystals are the original ones or not, but I like them very much, they really add drama.



These two are quite heavy, made of some type of medal, brass perhaps? The base is marble and a little chippy, adds character, right?

Then I found this set of Libby glasses. They are marketed as pink, but they look a little more peachy.



They are a perfect match for the little glass plate I picked up at my routine antique stop for $6.00...a perfect piece of depression glass, pattern: Old Colony. Just goes to show, you never know what you'll find! So for all those trips that didn't amount to much, this one paid off!

A Little Pink, Please.

I've always liked pink...all shades. I love that it can be soft and femine, yet bright and sassy! I haven't really decorated with pink for a long time, but a little pink here and there suits me just fine! Well...while hitting local thrift stores, I've found several pink things lately that I just couldn't pass by...I wasn't really looking for pink, they've seemed to find me.



These plates were found at different stores, but have two things in common: they are pink and are Limoges from France. I think they compliment each other really well.



After a little research on the markings on the back, this plate is dated 1903.



The bottom plate is from the 1930's and the top plate is from 1896-1900.

I love the detailing...



...and the fact that they were discarded but now have a new home in which they are loved.

Kiss the Cook!

My sister and I dropped by one of our favorite antique shops and found this recipe holder.



It's simple but oh~so~cute! I'm always on the lookout for silver/silver-plate utensils and this caught my eye.

At the next stop, I found this poor little tray.



The size was perfect...all it needed was a little love...a back...and well, glass. We found it in the most unbelievable place. I would have taken a picture but it was cold and raining. It was an old gas station that was converted into a junk antique shop. There were things outside, getting wet, in the bays, and inside where things could be kept dry. Not much rhyme or reason, just stuff. Across the street was another place, a little neater. The neater side belonged to a woman, the abandoned gas station belonged to a man, her husband. We were told to make of pile of what we wanted and make a bid...no offer would be refused. Well, howdy doody, we were on a hunt! My sister found a load, I came away with more flatware ~ go figure.



It's the pattern that gets me every time!

With the recipe holder as our inspiration, we thought of a great idea for an empty spot in my kitchen...use the little tray with my newly acquired flatware and make a sign. " Kiss the Cook" is always a winner. Hm...the wheels were turning!

Wanting a simple monochromatic look, I chose two brown papers to cover a sturdy piece of cardboard. This would serve as the "back", then glued down a bit of jute to separate the two pieces of scrapbook paper.



Deciding on a font, printing in brown ink, and adding newly cut glass, I was set.



Back to the inspiration piece, I replicated the placement of the flatware and attached them to the top of the try.



She was finished, happy, and displaying a great little message.



Cooking does have its perks!

I saved three!

While traveling, my sister and I made a stop at a community thrift store. It was so neat and orderly that we just had to go in and take a look. They had a "library" section that even had a sofa to sit while enjoying a good read!

They had a wide variety of books and these were arranged by genre. I found three that were surely destined for the trash. The covers were torn and tattered, just the kind I was looking for! SOLD... they were now mine to save.



I revived them by letting the pages breathe a bit...taking off the hard covers gave them room to stretch.



Aren't the pages beautiful? If only they could tell us who has enjoyed reading them.



I bundled them together with a bit of jute and added a family photo. I think these girls would have liked to sit and read a while with me.



But for now, I'll keep them in a mini library, tucked away, safe and sound.
